StrataCell

Structural soil cell system for constrained excavation depths

StrataCell Modular Soil System

StrataCell is a modular structural soil cell system designed to create uncompacted soil volumes beneath paved environments while supporting the loads of surrounding infrastructure.

With more than 94% open void space, the system maximises available rooting volume while maintaining the structural performance required for streets, public realm and development environments.

StrataCell is particularly suited to projects where excavation depth is limited or where pavement build-ups must remain shallow.

The Challenge
of Shallow
Build-Ups

Urban tree planting often takes place in locations where excavation depth is restricted by existing utilities, underground structures or pavement build-up limitations.

Without sufficient soil volume, root systems cannot develop properly and trees rarely achieve long-term canopy growth.

StrataCell addresses this challenge by enabling structural soil volumes to be created within shallower construction depths while maintaining pavement performance.

More than 94% void space for maximum rootable soil volume

Open structure allowing roots access to the full soil volume

Open lattice structure allowing roots access to the full soil volume

Large openings accommodating pipes and underground services

Configurable depths through stacked modules

Flexible layouts around utilities and services

Key Characteristics

StrataCell is designed to support tree planting within constrained urban environments where shallow construction depths and underground services can limit available rooting space. Its modular structure allows flexible layouts while maintaining reliable structural performance beneath paved surfaces.

Part of our Soil Cell Range

Integrated Structural Soil Systems

Our structural soil cell range allows designers to select systems suited to varying excavation depths, loading requirements and urban site constraints.

StrataCell is typically used where shallow pavement build-ups or restricted excavation depths limit available construction space, while RootSpace supports larger underground soil volumes beneath wider paved environments.

RootCell provides compact modular rooting structures for smaller planting areas and root pathways.

Together, these systems support healthy urban tree growth across a wide range of streetscape and development conditions.
